Festival programme (2015)

On 20 to 21 June 2015

With gardens opening from Wester Hailes to Portobello, Drylaw to Leith, from the city centre to Craigmillar, visitors will be spoilt for choice. The locations of each community garden can be found by exploring the Festival map. Below is a summary of each garden taking part in the Festival. Saturday 20th June

Garden Opening times Highlights
The Botanics (West entrance) 10am-3pm Sustrans guided cycle ride starting at 10 am from the Botanics
North Edinburgh Grows – Muirhouse 10am-1pm 10-11.30am: Calvinball family theatre performances. There’ll also be new potatoes to harvest, cook and eat.
Space to Grow – Fountainbridge 11am-3pm Delicious food with the Real Junk Food Project, book swap, kids activities and a ‘Save money, save the Planet’ workshop
Blackhall Library Garden – Blackhall 10am-5pm 10:30-11:30am: The Early Bird Catches the Worm children’s workshop (5-8 yrs) ~~ 10:45-11:30am: Foodie Fun Poetry Power (9-12 yrs) ~~ 2-3pm: Stories for under 5s ~~ All day: rhymes and crafts, or simply relax and read a book in the garden!
Edible Gardening Project at The Botanics – Inverleith 3pm-4.30pm

Meet the Edible Gardening Team and find answers to your questions about vegetable growing
Drylaw Neighbourhood Centre – Drylaw 11am-3pm Cooking demonstrations using garden produce, bug hunting, plant bring & buy, refreshments
Granton Community Gardeners – Granton 11am-3pm Garden tours from a community group of local residents and enjoy a picnic!
Bridgend Growing Communities – Old Dalkeith Road 11am-3pm Garden tour, children’s activities, practical workshop and a cooking session
Lochend Secret Garden – Lochend 11am-3pm Speak to the gardeners to hear their story or enjoy a guided history of the Lochend Garden Project (at 2pm)
Milton Road Community Gardens – Edinburgh College 11am-4pm Drop-in companion planting workshop, and Tasty Tales storytelling with Sheila Kinninmonth and at 12-1pm: launch of Edible Edinburgh Charter for good food for all
New Caledonian Woodlands – Inverleith 12pm-4pm Visit a yurt and Iron Age roundhouse, children’s activities, picnic plus live music from No Strings Attached wind band (at 2pm).
City Croft/Edinburgh Edible Campus – Tollcross/ECA 12pm-4pm Practical arts-based print-making workshop plus children’s activities and Changework’s ‘Love Food, Hate Waste’ stall
The Calders Green Shoots – Wester Hailes 1pm-3pm Go on an insect safari or get involved in conversations with Lou from The Federation of City Farmers
Sunshine on Leith Community Garden- Leith 2pm-5pm Sunshine on Leith Summer Fete, inc. children’s activities

Edible Gardening Project at The Botanics – Inverleith 1pm-3pm
(garden open all day)
Meet the Edible Gardening Team and find answers to your questions about vegetable growing. Storytelling on a food theme with Beth Cross (at 2pm)
Oxgangs Community Garden – Oxgangs 11am-3pm Growing workshops, BBQ, bouncy castle, face-painting and children’s disco! Plus Edinburgh Food Sharers food stall
Milton Road Community Gardens – Edinburgh College 11am-4pm Conversation around Seedfolks, by Paul Fleischman animated by Carolyn Urqhuart (12-3pm)
Bridgend Inspiring Growth – Old Dalkeith Road 11am-4pm Join in a big lunch (at 1pm). Live music from Song Works Choir (at 1:30pm), foraging, children’s activities, face-painting, storytelling.

Ride around the Festival

If you fancy getting on your bike and riding around the Festival venues, you can! In partnership with Sustrans, a volunteer-led ride is taking place starting from the Botanics and is the perfect way to get around the city. Further details can be found on the Sustrans website.
